“Providing
Real Hope for the Neighborhood”
Appalachian
Community CARE (ACC) was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization in 1990. The
original objective was to design, establish and manage an after-school
tutoring program for the children of Chestnut Ridge.
The
challenges of families in this region of Appalachia and
complicated. Children in
1990 were struggling academically, and there was an obvious need and
opportunity to develop a tutoring program. This after-school tutoring
initiative led to the formation of ACC. ACC began to pick up children of the community after school and
bring them to Chestnut Ridge where they worked with volunteers to
improve their school grades, to learn about Christ, and to improve their
chances for a brighter future. To have a place for its
activities, ACC built the community center on Chestnut Ridge. This 10,000 square foot facility was constructed with volunteer
labor and now serves many ministry purposes. It is a focal point for new
hope for this area. During
the mid-90s, other communities became interested in modeling their
community development activities after those on Chestnut Ridge. With this interest, the
Appalachia Community Network began to
evolve. Today, the network
includes Brownton, Flemington, Chestnut Ridge, Central Station,
Frametown, Belington and others.
In 1998, ACC entered
into a formal partnership with World Vision and World Servants known
today as Vision Appalachia. This unique partnership serves as a holistic
ministry designed to bring resources, energy and hope to the communities
of Appalachia and the children and families who live here.
